Earthquake Resilience Briefing for Thorndon Residents - 5 September

The Thorndon Residents' Association has been collaborating with the Wellington City Council (WCC).
You are invited to register for the Thorndon earthquake briefing, 7PM, Wednesday 5th September at the Kingsgate Hotel (24 Hawkstone Street).

The briefing is for residents living in Thorndon / Pipitea and surrounding areas. The details of the meeting are now on WCC's website where you can register.

WCC has coordinated with GNS Science to provide this community briefing about earthquakes.  The briefing is designed to give you a better understanding of the earthquake risk.

Wellington has already experienced four significant earthquakes since 1840. Our city survived those quakes with minimal casualties. The presenters will talk about what has been learned from these events, what the learnings are from the Canterbury earthquake sequence and what has been revealed by recent research by GNS Science.

The briefings will give you an overview of what has already been achieved to make our city safer and the work that is planned to improve infrastructure resilience.

You will also find out more about what you can do to make sure you and your family are ready for an earthquake and you will have the opportunity to talk to experts about earthquake issues over a cup of tea afterwards.

WCC and the Thorndon Residents' Association wish to encourage all Thorndon residents to get a better understanding of the earthquake risk to our community. TRA Members are aware of some of the seismic issues revealed over recent years. Here is an aggregation of related posts on the Association's blog: http://thorndon-residents.blogspot.co.nz/search/label/earthquake
Perhaps these may help frame-up further questions and exploration of the issues that are particularly pertinent to Thorndon residents. What are the questions you would like answered? Post them in the comment box for this blog. These will help the presenters prepare.

  1. Thanks TRA.
In our midst, over a short distance of 500m or so, the Wellington Fault passes under significant (regional) infrastructure such as arterial Tinakori Rd, Thorndon Quay, the urban motorway, right under all the railway tracks, Aotea Quay, the ferry terminal, and all the life-line utilities in-between (water, etc). I asssume we could be sitting on the verge of a lot action/failure when the fault ruptures, and also for long reconstruction periods thereafter. With Thordon at such a nexus,
    - what are the special additional response plans for this critical 'gate' in our community?
    - what additional ramifications (i.e. special to Thorndon) might have been appraised for impacts on residents in the suburb?
    - what, exactly, is the plan or our area in the worse case scenario?

    1. Additionally, the fault rupture hazard appears to cut across all the connecting streets in our suburb to/from Wadestown from Tinakori Rd i.e. Harriet St, George St, Park St, and Cottleville Tce.
Also, what is the appraised risk level from either landslide or rock fall off the slopes of Te Ahumairangi Hill i.e. the likelihood/impact for Thorndon residences, or risk of hindering access via Wadestown Rd, Grosvenor Tce, or Sar St?

  2. Questions:

    1. Please describe how buildings have been rated as 'yellow' stickied?
    2. These appear to be commercial dwellings and apartment blocks only? Residences are on their own? I hope this would not impede any insurance payout or be used as a reason for not paying out insurance entitlements to home owners?
    3. The lengthy times given to owner/landlords to upgrade their buildings is quite extraordinary. Is it actually that much of a threat or should we just take our chances? Life has risks.

    1. I am also interested in WCC's position with respect to responsibility and/or liability of rental properties. If a property is not safe, can / should it be able to be rented? Would disclosure of the risk be necessary?

  3. What is WCC's position regarding tunnels in the City? I feel concerned whenever I go through a tunnel, should we have them?
